MUMBAI: The selectors might not have found favour with him.

But almost every cricket fan, journalist or expert after reading the list of the team to Pakistan, might have reached for the Thesaurus to find synonyms for ''unfortunate'' to describe Rohan Gavaskar''s omission from the team.

The Bengal skipper though, seems to have taken it in his stride and is preparing for East Zone''s Duleep Trophy final against North in Chandigarh. Times News Network spoke to him to get his response on the team selection.

Batting high in the order for Bengal and East Zone and son of a legendary opening batsman, he knows where his off stump is and shoulders arms to a few tricky questions.

Excerpts:

Were you surprised at your omission?

I won''t say surprised. Let''s say I am disappointed.

Do you think you did enough in Australia to be an automatic choice for the team going Pakistan?

(Hesitates before speaking) It depends on how you look at it. I think I did well in the limited opportunities I got. But as a cricketer, one feels that you could always do better. A batsman after getting out for 200 feels he could have scored 250. Although I did well, I could always have done better and that''s how you keep improving.

You have been slotted as a one-day specialist. Do you see yourself making the Test team?

Yes. Why not? Like every first class cricketer worth his salt, my dream is to play Tests for the country. Hopefully, I will get a big score in the Duleep Trophy final and the domestic matches ahead and that will help my case.

You have been dropped pretty early in your international career. Will it help you get tougher?

Hopefully yes. There were only 15 guys who could get in. I could not make this team of 15, maybe I''ll make the next one. Highs and lows are part of a sportsman''s career. This is a low. Maybe there is a high somewhere down the corner.

Did you speak to your father after the team selection?

We speak to each other everyday whether there is a team selection or not.

What did he tell you?

I''m not going to tell you that. (Laughs). It is something that will remain between the Gavaskars.
